Excitation method refers to the method of magnetic field occurring in rotating generator. There are four kinds of excitation methods for DC motor:
1. Excited DC Motor
There is no connection between the excitation winding and armature winding. The DC motor supplied by other DC power supply to the excitation winding is called the other excitation DC motor. Permanent magnet DC motor can also be regarded as the other excitation or self-excitation DC motor. It is usually directly called the permanent magnet excitation method.
2. Parallel Excited DC Motor
The excitation winding and armature winding of shunt excitation DC motor are connected in parallel. As a shunt excitation generator, the terminal voltage from the motor itself supplies power for the excitation winding. As a shunt excitation motor, the excitation winding and armature share the same power supply, which is the same as the other excitation DC motor in terms of performance.
3. Series Excited DC Motor
The excitation winding of the series excitation DC motor is connected in series with the armature winding, and then connected to the DC power supply. The excitation current of this DC motor is armature current.
4. Compound Excited DC Motor
The compound excitation DC motor has two excitation windings: parallel excitation and series excitation. If the flux potential of series winding occurs in the same direction as that of shunt winding, it is called cumulative complex excitation. If the direction of two flux potentials is opposite, it is called differential compound excitation.
DC motors with different excitation methods have different characteristics. In general, the main excitation methods of DC motor are parallel excitation, series excitation and compound excitation. The main excitation methods of DC generator are separate excitation, parallel excitation and compound excitation.
